CBJ: What to expect from Charlotte restaurateur’s latest venture in South End

This restaurant will bring a touch of southern California to Charlotte’s South End.

SouthBound is slated to open by the end of September.

That 7,000-square-foot restaurant has the vibe of a southern California taqueria, from its menu down to decor.

“It’s unique to Charlotte. We’re looking for a one of a kind experience,” says David Jewell, co-owner.

He, along with the other owners of Mac’s Speed Shop, are partners in this venture.

Think Mexican street food that captures the feel of Baja and the Yucatan peninsula.

“We definitely don’t want to be confused with Tex-Mex,” Jewell says. “I think this style of food is really absent in the city.”

Executive Chef Kevin Kuruc is finalizing the menu now, but the dishes will be a labor of love because of ingredients and focus on quality. That means fresh ingredients: tortillas made in house with fresh-ground corn, plenty of avocados, cheeses such as cotija, and premium tequila and Mexican beers.
